Tri Nations: Championship Day

The final day of the 2017 Tri Nations Wheelchair Rugby Invitational began with a semifinal game between USA and Canada. USA had already beat Canada all three times they faced each other during the four-day tournament. The USA made it 4-0 against the Canadians with a 53-33 victory in today’s contest, which advanced the Americans into the Championship game against Japan.

The United States beat the Japanese in their first game, but had two close losses in the other two meetings. Today’s matchup followed the same script as the three previous games between #2 USA and #3 Japan, the game was either tied or either team had a 1-point advantage the entire way. The U.S. led 27-26 at halftime and after three periods the teams were notched at 40. Midway through the final period Japan began getting some momentum and after leading by 1, took a two-point advantage, 49-47 with about 3 minutes remaining in the game. Despite a hard fought final few minutes by the U.S., Japan came away with the Championship, winning it 55-54.
