Get a complete picture of your overall body composition by booking a DEXA scan with Lakeshore’s Sports Science and Performance Center. Whether you’re starting a new fitness journey, on a new medication prescribed by your doctor, or just interested in learning more about your body — a DEXA scan can be a valuable monitoring tool for anyone trying to improve their overall health.
What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan is a low-density, whole-body x-ray scan that provides a comprehensive report of body composition, including body fat, lean tissue, and bone mineral density using an FDA-approved device. A typical scan takes about 10-15 minutes. You will then meet with an SSPC staff member to go over your results.
What can DEXA tell you?
A DEXA scan can offer important information like total body fat percentage, fat-free mass index (the amount of mass that is not fat, relative to your height) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area (the amount of internal abdominal fat around one’s organs). In short, a DEXA scan can create a map of your body and its makeup, allowing you to monitor fat and lean mass distribution on your fitness journey.
DEXA scans provide body composition information and are not a substitute for medical advice. Always consult your prescribing clinician before making changes to medication, nutrition, or exercise plans.
Who should get a DEXA scan?
Anyone can benefit from learning more about their body composition, regardless of age and fitness level. Whether your are starting a new fitness journey or medication (like a GLP-1) or looking to take your game to the next level as a competitive athlete, a DEXA scan can provide you with valuable data to make informed decisions. While GLP-1 medications offer substantial health benefits like reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and other chronic conditions, they can also carry the risk of lean muscle mass loss due to accelerated weight loss. If you have been prescribed a GLP-1 medication by your doctor, it’s important to know what kind of mass you’re losing to develop an appropriate exercise routine to meet your goals.
