2020 Pioneer Classic

Twenty-five youth and adult wheelchair basketball teams from across the country will compete January 17-19 at Lakeshore Foundation’s 33rd annual Pioneer Classic. This will be the largest Pioneer Classic in history featuring College, DII, DIII, Women’s, Varsity and Prep division teams. All games are free and open to the public, and games highlighted in red will be streamed live at youtube.com/lakeshorefoundation. Invite your friends, bring your family, and cheer on the teams!

The final day of the 2020 Pioneer Classic featured some close matchups to determine final placement.

In DIII action, Orlando knocked off Music City 35-28 to finish in fifth. Arkansas had a dominating performance in the third-place game defeating Charlotte 46-24. The Women’s Division third place game featured a good matchup between Lakeshore and Charlotte, but the Rollin’ Hornets came away with the 36-29 victory. In Intercollegiate/DII play, Shepherd (Atlanta) finished with a 69-58 win over Auburn University and a fifth-place spot. Ft. Lauderdale and Los Angeles battled for third, with the Sharks clinching a 59-48 win.

The University of Alabama men and women defended their powerhouse status with solid championship victories over TIRR (Houston), 70-43 and Arizona Storm, 64-14 to take the Intercollegiate/DII and Women’s Division titles. The closest matchup came in the DIII championship with the Shepherd Stealers securing the win 60-48 over the Brooks Ballers.

Day two of action at the 33rd annual Pioneer Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament decided who would advance to Sunday’s championship rounds and included several youth teams battling it out in the Varsity and Prep Divisions.

First in the Intercollegiate/DII Division, the University of Alabama (3-0) and TIRR (3-0) of Houston continued their winning ways on Saturday and will meet for the championship tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Shepherd and Auburn University will battle it out in the 5th place game, while Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale meet up in the 3rd place game.

In Division III play, Shepherd continued checking the win column and stayed undefeated on Saturday. The Rollin’ Hornets won a close one over previously undefeated Arkansas by the score of 40-37. Shepherd (Atlanta) dominated TIRR (Houston) 57-23. The championship game will see Shepherd face Brooks. Charlotte will face Arkansas in the 3rd place game. Orlando and Music City (Nashville) meet in the 5th place game.

The University of Alabama women also remained unbeaten and cemented themselves a spot Women’s Division championship game. The Arizona Storm women also picked up a big 46-36 win over the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets. That means the Alabama women (3-0) and Arizona (2-1) will play for the women’s title. Charlotte and Lakeshore will face each other in the 3rd place game.

The opening day of the 33rd annual Pioneer Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament featured 21 games and fierce competition. Teams in Intercollegiate/Division II, Division III and Women’s Division hit the court to begin their journey toward Championship Sunday.

Top ranked LA Clippers started the day with a defeat in the Intercollegiate/DII Division to the TIRR Hotwheels from Houston. The University of Alabama men’s and women’s teams dominated day one finishing undefeated. Auburn lost to Ft. Lauderdale and Shepherd (Atlanta), while Auburn University lost to the LA Clippers, who are 1-1.

In DIII action, Charlotte, Arkansas and Shepherd all had strong performances, finishing the day undefeated. In the middle of the pack, Brooks and TIRR finished with 1-1 and 2-1 records, respectively.

On the Women’s side, The University of Alabama secured solid victories over its opponents. Arizona and Charlotte both finished 1-1. Lakeshore women will hope for their first victory tomorrow.
