Day eight of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games featured some great semifinal action. The USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team began the day with a strong victory over Great Britain. The team shot an impressive 69% from the field with Rose Hollermann shooting 11/15 and Desiree Miller 13/18. The women will face Germany in the gold medal game tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. CT. In the evening, the U.S. Women’s Goalball Team fell to Turkey 1-11 in the semifinals. The U.S. will now go on to face Brazil in the bronze medal match tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CT.
To finish the day’s semifinal wheelchair basketball competition, the U.S. men took on Turkey and dominated with their unrelenting defense. They advanced to the gold medal final with a 74-54 win and will take on Spain Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT. USA Wheelchair Rugby was back on the court today facing Sweden and came up with another big win, 54-44. Top scorers were Josh Brewer with 16 and Chuck Aoki with 14. Next up for USA Wheelchair Rugby is Japan Friday at 2:30 p.m. CT.
In individual competition, Josh Roberts competed in his final event of the Games, the men’s 1500m T52, and finished ninth. Congratulations also go out to former USA Wheelchair Rugby player Will Groulx. Groulx, who has transitioned to the sport of cycling, captured gold in the men’s H2 road race.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Jennifer Schuble will race Saturday in her final event of these Games, the women’s C4-5 road race at 7:45 a.m. CT.
