Rio Day 6 and 7: Wheelchair Rugby Begins Competition, Goalball and Wheelchair Basketball Approach Final Rounds

U.S. Women’s Goalball finished their pool play on day 6 of the Paralympic Games with a 7-3 win over Israel. This placed the women as the second seed in pool C and matched them up with rival Canada in the quarterfinals. USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball also had a big win over Brazil 66-35 to advance to the semifinals. Rose Hollerman was the top scorer with 28. The U.S. Women will face Great Britain on Thursday at 9:45 a.m. CT.

Day 7

Day 7 was packed with USA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball and Women’s Goalball quarterfinal matchups and Rio 2016 debuts for Jennifer Schuble (cycling) on the road and USA Wheelchair Rugby on the hard wood.

The U.S. men got off to a slow start in their quarterfinal against the Netherlands but quickly gained momentum and never looked back defeating the Dutch 70-37. The men will take on Turkey in the semifinal tomorrow at 7 p.m. CT. The U.S. Women’s Goalball Team also had a strong performance, shutting out Canada 2-0. Both American goals were scored by Jen Armbruster. The women will also play Turkey in semifinal action tomorrow night at 6 CT. Jennifer Schuble improved on her seventh place finish in the 500m time trial (track) with fifth in the women’s C5 road time trial. She has one final event, the women’s C4-5 road race Saturday at 7:45 a.m. CT.

Tomorrow Josh Roberts, who finished eighth in his opening event, the men’s 100m T52, is back at the track for the men’s 1500m T52 final at 8:20 a.m. CT. While most athletes are finishing up competition, the USA Wheelchair Rugby Team is just getting started. After a 51-42 victory over France today, they will take on Sweden tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT.
