Lakeshore Foundation

Youth Recreation - Fall 2010

*Unless otherwise stated, classes are only open to children with qualifying conditions.   
If stated “siblings are welcome” then they are welcome in the program only if they are participating with a sibling who has a qualifying condition.

FRESH (Fitness Recreation Exercise Sports Health) Age: 6-18
Dates: Tuesday & Thursday 4:00-5:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, September 2-Thursday December 16
Registration: Pre-registration required. Registration is limited

September-All Star Recreation (basketball, football, goal ball, new games and more)
October-Extreme Sports and Recreation (Air guns, archery, climbing, slalom and more)
November-Water Wonder Month (Kayaking, pool games, swimming and other water related water activities)
December-Holiday Fitness and Fun

This program will focus on sport, recreation and fitness activities that may include basketball, football, swimming, archery, tennis, cycling, field trips, crafts, climbing and more. Participants must be able to function independently in a group setting. Siblings are welcome if accompanying a member with a qualifying condition and meet age criteria. One field trip per month will be offered which will include activities at an outdoor nature park, museum, bowling and more. VIP (Visually Impaired Program) Recreation Program
Dates: August 30, 2010-December 2010
Mondays 6:00-7:00 p.m., ages 8-12
Wednesdays 5:15-6:00 p.m., ages 3-7

This program is for youth who are blind or visually impaired and focuses on sports, recreation, play and fitness. Pre-registration is required. For more information please call Jen Armbruster at 205-313-7432 or email jena@lakeshore.org.

Super Saturdays -Ages 6-18
Dates: October 2,2010 - Fall Frenzy-football, air gun clinic & competition and more December 4, 2010
Cost: $10 per person-for Lakeshore Foundation member
$15 per person-for non-Lakeshore Foundation member
Fee includes light lunch and all activities.

Super Saturday is for youth with a physical disability and their siblings. The program is recreational and designed for participants to learn about and try a variety of different adaptive sports and games all in one day. Participants must be able to function independently in a group setting. Activities will be adapted to meet the skill level of each participant. Pre-registration is required. Winter Camp-Ages: 5-18
Dates: December 20-22, 2010
Time: 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Cost: $10 a day per person-for Lakeshore Foundation Member
$15 a day per person-for non-Lakeshore Foundation Member
Fee includes light lunch and all activities.

Activities will be adapted to meet the skill level of each participant from beginner to advanced level. Participants must be able to function independently in a group setting. Siblings are welcome if accompanying a member with a qualifying condition and meet age criteria. Pre-registration is required. Youth Competitive Athletics

All participants must be current Lakeshore Foundation member to be eligible for competitive athletic team.

Wheelchair Basketball-Ages: 6-19
Dates: October 5, 2010, 6:00 p.m. Mandatory parent meeting at Lakeshore Foundation
October 6, 2010-April 2011 Practice, games and tournaments
Tuesday and Thursday-4:30-6:00 p.m. Prep
Tuesday and Thursday-5:30-7:30 p.m. Varsity

This program is for youth with a physical disability who can function independently on a competitive athletic team. Practice and competition in wheelchair basketball will be held at Lakeshore Foundation. For more information, please call Patty Cornelius at 205-313-7433 or pattyc@lakeshore.org.

Goal ball-Ages: 10-19
Date: August 9, 2010
Days: Mondays- Fitness training 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Wednesdays- Practice 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Sundays- Practice 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Recreation and Athletics

Super Saturdays -Ages 6-18
Dates: February 5, 2011, April 2, 2011
Cost: $10 per person-for Lakeshore Foundation Member
$15 per person-for non-Lakeshore Foundation Member
Fee includes light lunch and all activities.

New Spring Break Family Camp, March 13-16, 2011 overnight at Lakeshore Foundation. Join us for a fun-filled three days at Lakeshore Foundation for the long requested family camp. This camp is for youth, 4-17 years old, who have a physical disability or visual impairment and family members including siblings who meet age requirement. The camp is Sunday evening through Wednesday morning, March 13-16, 2011.

The camp will feature family activities including swimming, cycling, archery, air guns, arts and crafts, field trips, parent meetings, siblings meetings and more. Cost is $50 per person and includes three nights lodging in accessible dorms, eight meals plus snacks and all activities.

June 1-5, 2011 SEC (Sports Education Camp) -Overnight camp for blind and visually impaired youth age 8-16.
June 13-16, 2011 Junior Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Camp- Day Camp for youth age 4-19.
June 24-26, 2011 Camp Strive- Overnight Family Camp at Children's Harbor.
July 18-28, 2011 Inclusion Camp- Summer Fun Day Camp for youth age 7-16.

Youth Aquatic Programs Fall 2010

Session 1-August 23-October 14, 2010
Session 2-October 25-December 16, 2010

Wet Tots Age: 6 months-3 years
Monday & Wednesday 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

This is a parent/child class that focuses on strength, flexibility and fine and gross motor skills. Parent and/or an adult attendant is required to stay and be involved with their child during class. ACES (Active Children Exercise & Swim) Age: 4-18
Tuesday & Thursday- 4:00-4:45 p.m.

This program provides the opportunity to work on functional skills, balance, body awareness, and other fundamental movement patterns in an aquatic environment. A small group setting provides opportunities for socialization and functional play. Children who require one-on-one physical support are required to attend with a parent or adult attendant. Learn-to-Swim Age: 3 - 12
Group 1: Monday & Wednesday-4:00--4:45 p.m.
Group 2: Monday & Wednesday-4:45-5:30 p.m.
Group 3: Tuesday & Thursday-4:45-5:30 p.m.

Registration: Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 per session, per group.
Class focuses on basic water safety skills as well as developing the fundamentals of swimming in a fun environment. Children must be able to work in a small group setting and follow basic instructions. Siblings are welcome if they meet skill and age requirement.

Pre-registration required and there will be a maximum of 15 children per class. Each child may sign up for "only" one group and will not be able to attend additional days. Pre-registration is required. To ensure space is available, call Emily Mallard at 205-313-7467 or email emilym@lakeshore.org.

Teen Swim Age: 13-19
Monday & Wednesday 5:45-6:30

Registration: Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 per session. A minimum of four participants are required for class to be held. (Learn how to swim, paddle, participate in aqua aerobics, play, games and more.) Call Emily Mallard at 205-313-7467 or email emilym@lakeshore.org.

Youth Swim Club Age: Youth up to 18
Tuesday & Thursday 4:15-5:00 p.m.

This club is for youth to work on stroke refinement, speed and endurance. You MUST be able to swim a minimum of 25 yards without stopping and be an independent swimmer. Siblings are welcome if they meet skill and age requirement. **This is not the Jr. Swim Team. Pre-registration is required. Call Jason Kendall at 205-313-7427 or email jasonk@lakeshore.org.

Private One-on-One Swim Lessons Age: 3-19
Fee: $20 per 30-minute lesson for members
