Lakeshore’s Second Annual “Amazing Race”

Have you ever tried swimming with your legs wrapped together in plastic wrap? Or climbed a wall blindfolded? If you are up for the challenge, then Lakeshore’s Amazing Race is for you.

The second annual event is modeled after the TV show “The Amazing Race.” Teams of four representing a variety of ages and affiliations will “race” through Birmingham as they solve clues, complete interactive challenges and compete for a grand prize. The event will be held Saturday, July 31, and is open to anyone ages seven and up. Hosted by Lakeshore Foundation and Lakeshore Young Professionals (LYP), the event is presented by Balch & Bingham, L.L.P.

Lakeshore Foundation’s Director of Development Natalie Hausman-Weiss said, “Last year’s race was a tremendous success with 23 teams competing. Teams chose names, dressed in team colors and even decorated their cars to match. “In addition to having a great time, they learned how it feels to compete with a physical disability – to swim without a leg or climb with a visual impairment – and that people with physical disabilities can do the same things able-bodied individuals do. Our goal is to familiarize more of the community with Lakeshore and the people we serve.”

Among the teams competing last year was the Welborn family, whose son Josh and Zach are both legally blind due to albinism. Their mother, Patricia, said, “We’ve always told the boys they can do anything the way the boys have to do it. This gave us an opportunity to experience a little bit of life in their shoes to better understand what daily life is like for them.”

Brandon Robinson, a member of last year’s winning team, said, “The race was so much more than we expected. First we had a great time. But more important, we experienced what it’s like for a person with a physical disability to function in the real world. Several of my teammates weren’t familiar with Lakeshore and were truly amazed by what they saw. As for this year’s race – yes, we will definitely be back!”

Teams of four may consist of family members, friends, co-workers or a combination. The entry fee is $25 per person, with each team member asked to raise an additional $100 of support through pledges from friends and family. For corporate teams, they entry fee is $500 per team of four, with additional fund-raising encouraged. Valuable sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m. The event is expected to conclude by 1 p.m. with teams invited back to Lakeshore to celebrate. To register, simply complete the registration form here or go online to www.lakeshore.org. Deadline for registration is July 10. For more information, please call 205.313.7417.
