Injured Military Initiative
Lima Foxtrot programs include a number of weekend-long camps that help service members like Dustin get back to living healthy, active independent lives through participation in sports and recreation activities. Dustin is a 22-year-old retired Marine who hails from Michigan. He was severely injured in May 2004 when he triggered an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) while on foot patrol. His list of injuries boggles the mind. He lost his sight, both legs were broken, knees shattered, fingers amputated, muscle and soft tissue blown away. Fifty pieces of shrapnel landed in his face. Dustin participated in Lakeshore Foundation’s Operation Rise & Conquer camp for injured military personnel and learned that in spite of the new challenges he faces in life, there isn’t anything he can’t overcome. This event is not just about experiencing things the participants thought would not be possible after their injuries, it also allows them to gain more self-confidence.
